With so many different duvet and mattress sizes to choose from, it’s no surprise that many people find the task of refreshing their bedding a little overwhelming!

But getting the right size duvet for your bed is important both in terms of comfort and aesthetics. Think of yourself a little like Goldilocks; you don’t want your bedding to be too thick or too thin, too big or too small, too hot or too cold. You want your bedding to be just right.

To help you ensure your new duvet looks the part and feels fantastic night after night, our sleep experts have created a list of top tips to use when searching for the perfect duvet.

Sleepseeker’s tips for finding the perfect fit

  1. Know your mattress: To be doubly sure you’re choosing the right size duvet for your bed, it’s best to measure your mattress as UK, EU, and US sizes differ from one another.
  2. Consider any overhang: For a neat appearance, consider the "drop" or overhang of the duvet on the sides of the bed, which is usually around 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) on each side.
  3. Bedding sets: If you're purchasing a duvet as part of a bedding set, the size might be predetermined. In such cases, check the dimensions provided by the manufacturer.
  4. Duvet filling: Different types of duvet fillings will be better suited to different sleepers. Consider whether you tend to get too warm during the night, whether you need hypoallergenic materials, and whether you prefer natural duck feather duvets or ones made using artificial fibres.
  5. Personal preference: Some people prefer a larger duvet for extra cosiness. If your partner (or you) is known to be a duvet-hogger, getting a duvet that’s slightly too big for your bed might not be a bad idea!
  6. International size differences: UK duvet sizes will be different compared to other countries, so be mindful of international sizing if you're purchasing from or in a different region.
