Simply put, yes, you can use an electric blanket with a mattress topper. If you’re going to do it, though, there are a few nuances you may want to be familiar with.

An electric blanket is a fantastic item for warming your bed and you on those cold winter nights. Not only that, but they can be wonderfully calming. If you’ve already invested in a mattress topper, you may have a few questions about how the two items work together.

Remember, while you generally can use electric blankets and mattress toppers together, every electric blanket is different. We’d always recommend checking the manufacturer's instructions for your particular electric blanket as they will indicate whether you shouldn’t use it with a mattress topper.

As sleep experts, we’re going to help answer your questions on how electric blankets and mattress toppers can co-exist in your bed.

Can You Put An Electric Blanket Over A Mattress Topper?

Not only can you put an electric blanket on top of a mattress topper, but it’s actually the best place to put it. We’d usually recommend placing your electric blanket between your topper and your sheet, creating a lovely warm insulating sandwich. This stops it from being directly in contact with your skin but gives you the optimal performance from the blanket.

Can You Put An Electric Blanket Under A Mattress Topper?

While you technically can do this, you’ll not get optimal performance. With a thin mattress topper, it may work, but for a good mattress topper, like a memory foam mattress topper, you’re unlikely to get any benefit from your electric blanket. It simply won’t transfer enough heat through to you!

Should an electric blanket go under or over a mattress topper?

At Sleep Seeker, if you’re going to use both an electric blanket and a mattress topper together, we’d always recommend putting your electric blanket on top of your mattress topper and below your bottom sheet.

This way, you’ll get all the benefits of your mattress topper combined with the wonderful warming sensation from your electric blanket. Placing an electric blanket under your mattress topper will simply stop the heat from transferring to you properly and negate its use.

Some people use mattress toppers as more than just additional comfort. If you’re using a mattress topper or mattress protector to help add a layer of warmth or insulation, you may find the addition of an electric blanket is too much. Consider your options and work out the best way to warm your bed up.

FAQs

Can you put an electric blanket on top of a memory foam topper?

Yes, you can! An excellent thick and comfy memory foam topper will still work well with an electric blanket on top of it. To get the best benefit front our memory foam mattress topper, we’d recommend putting your blanket on top, then your bottom sheet.

Can you put an electric blanket over a mattress protector?

If you’re using a thinner mattress protector, perhaps because you’ve already got a luxurious memory foam mattress, you can still add an electric blanket on top. While a mattress protector is thinner than a proper mattress topper, we’d still recommend putting the electric blanket on top of the mattress protector and below your sheet.

Can you put a heated mattress pad over a mattress topper?

Yes! Heated mattress pads work just like an electric blanket, so you shouldn’t have any issue with putting one over a mattress topper.
